About Us

Mira Listen is the first FOR Latino Millennials, BY Latino Millennials podcast available that speaks to the issues of our generation. We share our Latino Millennial perspective on everything from deportations and politics to movie reviews and pop-culture.

This to us has been something that has been on our minds for a while, but we always thought somebody would create it or open the door for the format to be explored. It's been five years of talking about it, playing with segments or talking about the lack of diversity in public media. We decided it was time to stop speculating and just do it ourselves. We, three Latino millennials, see a lack of Spanish educational, yet entertaining programming in public media. As much as we love our public media regulars, we are still finding it difficult to connect and we continue to see the absence of the young Latino voices not being represented as the narratives. { This past October, I was selected by AIR Media to attend the public media conference in Pittsburg, while it was a great honor to be selected as a scholar, being there only reiterated my thought of "where are the Latinos." I remember Shereen Marisol, from Code switch mentioning in a panel that only 3% of Latinos work at NPR. } ~Pita J - What we intend to do with our podcast is something for them by them. More than just tell you the story, we want you to experience it with us, through our range of experiences. We want to explore topics that reflect the intensity of our times and the color of our culture.

  Pita is a multimedia journalist based in Phoenix who has a deep understanding of the complicated issues on which she reports. Equally curious and passionate, Pita digs through many layers to get to the heart of each story. As a journalist, Pita is inspired by social issues with a focus on underserved populations and the Latino community. Since graduating from Arizona State University she has worked in multiple settings, from mainstream television news to grassroots community radio stations. A contributing writer for both Spanish and English publications, Pita is currently producing an episodic web series about DREAMers and co-producing her first documentary about the healthcare system within the undocumented community in Phoenix.

  Carla is creative and she’s a doer! As a DREAMer* living in Arizona, she couldn’t work for other people so she began working for herself as a graphic designer. Her artwork is viewed nationally as some of the most unapologetic and heart wrenching work in modern social movements. In 2012, she decided to take a step further and founded YCM, which has allowed her to use different skills to build innovative and exciting marketing campaigns. Carla has managed national social media campaigns for several organizations and designed visual campaigns that have been featured in ColorLines magazine and the Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS). What she enjoys most about her work at YCM is having the opportunity to tell a back-story, something that will create an emotional connection between them and the community they are trying to reach.

  Dom is 8th generation Latino, he prides himself with being part of the generation “in-between” when it comes to technology. This means he can remember a time when cell phones didn’t exist or he looked forward to buying a CD to see the design of the cover. That is probably why he places a high value in technology’s ability to enhance people's story. After graduating with an art degree in 2007, he went on to work at the Arizona Attorney General’s office as their digital content creator and there he won the “Best Overall Web Site” award from the Conference of Western Attorneys General (CWAG). That’s when he realized how digital content could improve people’s messaging by connecting them to resources. Dominique later went on to be a digital organizer for different community organizations.
